New
Year Goals
Lessons
from Dickens
It
is that time of year again. We make resolutions, set goals
and take that first step. Many of us will follow through
on our goals and accomplish them and some of us won’t.
Following
through on goals or resolutions can be difficult because
it means breaking a pattern of habit. As you know, bad
habits die-hard.
If
I may, I would like give you a fool proof way of following
through on your goals and change those habits you wish to
get rid off.
Have
you ever heard of the Dickens story:- A Christmas Carol.
The Anti-hero was Scrooge an old Miser stuck in his ways,
never meeting his full potential, who made people around
him miserable.
To
breakout of this pattern, 3 behavioural specialists met
him, excuse me ghosts: - The ghost of the past, ghost of
the present and the ghost of the future.
To
stimulate change the first ghost, the ghost of the past
gave Scrooge a picture of his past and the effects of his
past choices. Pictures of the past stimulate our
psychological impulse of regret. Regret is good, it is
usually our first emotion when we finally realise we made
a bad choice.
Now
he was ready for the second behavioural specialist, excuse
me ghost. The ghost of the present. The ghost gave him the
picture of the damage he was causing due to his current
habits and patterns of life. This instilled for the first
time a concern for how his actions affected himself and
others. You see change can only occur if we have a clear
picture of the results of our present pattern or habits.
Finally
the ghost of the future met Scrooge. This ghost was able
to take him in to the future to experience the bitter end
result of his pattern of life. For Scrooge it was his own
lonely death with no one to mourn for him. This glimpse
into the future gave Scrooge a chance to make changes and
create a clear picture of his goals for the future and a
compelling must to change. I.e. A smoker never stops
straight away because a puff of the cancer stick doesn’t
kill them instantly. If she was able to concentrate on the
consequences of not achieving the goal, the image of
achieving becomes a must rather than a mere should.

arts. We will even design a program for you if our general
program does not suit your needs.
